The form of Yoga I teach is known as Vinyasa Yoga. This style, also known as “Power Yoga” and “Flow Yoga”, is a fluid practice of strong, flowing Yoga postures, called asanas, synchronized with the breath. In this form of Yoga, the mind closely follows the slow, deliberate “ujjayi” breathing that serves to heat up the body. This heat helps to prevent injury, detoxify the body by sweating, and according to some practitioners, creates “Tapas”, a sacred heat that transmutes the physical body into spiritual energy. The whispering sound of the ujjayi breathing in and of itself is a meditation. Oftentimes classes consist of moving through as many as 60 asanas.
I play a variety of music during class: from East Indian chanting, to Native American flutes, to African drumming, to classical guitar renditions of the Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin!
In terms of personal style, I can be spontaneous, humorous and quirky if the energy allows. While maintaining an eagle eye, I oftentimes use verbal cues in my classes as well as giving gentle yet firm physical adjustments. Each class is ended with a deep relaxation to allow the body to absorb what it has experienced.
